Credit and debt.
Know where you stand.
Check your credit file, fix what is wrong and find free help if debts feel too much.
Check your credit file
Lenders check your credit file before they lend. Each credit reference agency can hold different details, so it helps to see them all. Checkmyfile shows your report from four agencies in one place.

Fix mistakes
Look for accounts you do not know, wrong addresses and payments marked late that you paid on time. If something is wrong, ask the agency to correct it. They must look into it.
Quick wins that can help your score
- Register on the electoral roll at your address.
- Pay every bill on time. Set up direct debits for at least the minimum.
- Keep card balances well below their limits.
- Space out credit applications. Many in a short time can count against you.
- Close old accounts you no longer use, but keep your oldest one open if it is in good order.
Mortgages with bad credit
A missed payment, default or CCJ does not always rule you out. Some lenders look past older problems, or ones with a clear reason. A broker can tell you which lenders to try before you apply, so you avoid extra searches on your file.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Common questions
Can I see my credit file for free?
Yes. You have a legal right to see your credit file for free from each of the three main credit reference agencies.
Does checking my own credit file harm my score?
No. Checking your own file is a soft search. Lenders cannot see it and it does not affect your score.
Can I get a mortgage with bad credit?
Often, yes. Some lenders accept missed payments, defaults or CCJs, depending on how old they are and why they happened. A broker knows which lenders to try.
