Bank of England holds base rate at 3.75%

The base rate stays at 3.75% for now. The next decision is on 5 November. Here is what it means for your mortgage.

The Bank of England kept the base rate at 3.75% on 17 September 2026. It is the sixth time in a row the rate has stayed the same.

If you are on a tracker mortgage, your payments stay the same for now. If you are on your lender's standard variable rate, your rate may also stay the same, though lenders can change it at any time.

If you are on a fixed rate, nothing changes until your deal ends. But if it ends in the next six months, now is a good time to look. Most lenders let you secure a new rate up to six months early.

The next decision is due on 5 November 2026. Some commentators expect the rate could rise later this year.
