Energy price cap rises 4% from 1 October

A typical household paying by direct debit will pay £1,723 a year, up £60. Here is what to do now.

Ofgem's energy price cap rose by 4% on 1 October 2026. A typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit will now pay about £1,723 a year, up from £1,663. That is about £60 more a year, or £5 a month.

The cap limits the price of each unit of energy and the daily standing charge. It does not cap your total bill, so if you use more, you pay more.

This cap runs until 31 December 2026. Ofgem updates it every three months and usually announces the January level in late November.

What to do now: take a meter reading and send it to your supplier, so your bill is based on what you used. Then check your direct debit is set at the right level with our free checker.
